Almost no effort was put into getting my job.
I have an excellent, incredible, efficient, productive structure for job-hunting (pat on the back, self-high-five, air jump *freeze*) but this time I didn't really follow that structure. In fact, I almost put negative effort into this one. The morning that I applied for Turtle Bay I played on their beach, rolled in the waves, used their beach shower, washed my hair with dish soap and made it into funny shapes with the suds... in their public beach shower, went to my car and changed in a back parking lot and then went in to apply. I just so happened to apply on a Tuesday, which is the day they do screenings for new employees, and I only had to wait an hour for that to begin! On Friday they called me twice and left two voicemails to set up an interview for the next day. I didn't get the voicemail till the next day and called both managers back. Neither of them answered so I left voicemails. They called me again... I missed it again. I called back again and verified an interview for Sunday. Went to the interview and within 15 minutes of walking in I was walking right back out, a newly hired employee of Turtle Bay Resort!
I literally took off my shoes and started dancing the instant I was out of view of the front desk.
I am a host and I'll primarily be working the 6am shifts for the Palm Terrace restaurant, but I will also be working at night and also for room service and also at other restaurants in the hotel. So... I don't really have a title. But they keep calling me host and my ID says "host" so I guess I'm a host!
In addition to getting paid a great wage, I get incredible benefits! They don't kick in for 90 days but I am anxiously awaiting the opportunity to stay at any of the Benchmark Hospitality's 24 hotels for $39/night. Also I get dental so I can finally go to the dentist. Hooty hoo! AND I get discounted movie tickets so I can take... myself to the movies all the time.
Did I mention I'm the only person I know that is still in Hawaii? Ok, that's an exaggeration. There are still a few great folks around. However I can never seem to get ahold of them and when I do they're always busy. This week I had to drive to town THREE times. Each time I made sure to make multiple stops and run all the errands I needed to so I wouldn't have to go back anytime soon. But of course I ended up going again to arrange some things for my job and then again to buy suitable shoes for my job. And all 3 of those times I made the drive alone. "Boring" seems to be the word of the day every day. Getting off work at 11am leaves me with an entire day which is great, and then eventually an entire night which is also great. That's 19 hours every day that I'm free!...of which I'm spending 85% completely alone. That being said, if you have the desire and the funds to come to Hawaii, DO IT! I'll gladly take you in and show you the island.
For now, I'll be spending my days at the beach cooped up at my favorite spot with a slackline, my hammock, fruitsnacks and a book!
LIFE IS GOOD!

That was my wife Jessie's job that you just got! Seriously, its awesome isn't it? You get paid absolutely ridiculously for being a hostess, and if people do take-out orders, and they tip you, that goes straight into your little pockets.
From what I understand, some of your managers are bat-poop-crazy though. And in the mornings at Palm Terrace you wear their potato sack mu-mu dresses.
But, if you're down to make friends with some of the old ladies who work there, they're like, way cool.
In fact, instead of just typing all this, you should just come over one night and munch food and Jess will tell you about the place.
Emily! So excited about the new job! I don't know if we will make it out there this year, but if we could be AWESOME. High five on those grades. So proud of you :)
Love your host post. They're gonna love you there! Congrats! Have a GREAT summer!
Matt no way, I didn't know you guys were expecting!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!
Awesome! I didn't know we were either! How did you find out? I thought I was usually one of the first to know...
Everyone at work kept asking if Jess had her baby yet and my manager told me I someone was going on maternity leave. Maybe there are two Jess'! Hahaha
